We love coffee and we love books. The two are made for each other. We’re Mocha Memoirs and we’re dealers of diverse speculative fiction. Like a favorite coffee house, we offer new flavors for every reader. Taste one of our delicious and daring titles today!

Mission-We believe representation in speculative fiction (science fiction, horror, fantasy) is not only important, but a necessity. We publish engaging stories that amplify diverse experiences with vivid storytelling, robust protagonists, and fearless voices.

NICOLE GIVENS KURTZ (SHE/HER) – PUBLISHER AND OWNER

Educator. Author. Mom. Nicole loves reading, writing, and anime. She enjoys reading works that promote women of color and futuristic settings. She also loves a good mystery. She started Mocha Memoirs to provide more diversity in speculative fiction. She’s also a scribbler of tales. Learn more about her at Other World Pulp.  She lives in Rock Hill with her family.

 RIE SHERIDAN ROSE (SHE/HER) – EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Rie Sheridan Rose multitasks. A lot. Her short stories appear in numerous anthologies, including Nightmare Stalkers and Dream Walkers Vols. 1 and 2, and Killing It Softly Vols. 1 and 2. She has authored twelve novels, six poetry chapbooks, and lyrics for dozens of songs. These were mostly written in conjunction with Marc Gunn, and can be found on “Don’t Go Drinking with Hobbits” and “Pirates vs. Dragons” for the most part–with a few scattered exceptions.

Her favorite work to date is The Conn-Mann Chronicles Steampunk series with five books released so far: The Marvelous Mechanical Man, The Nearly Notorious Nun, The Incredibly Irritating Irishman, The Fiercely Formidable Fugitive, and The Elderly Earl’s Estate.

A.C. THOMPSON (SHE/HER) – EDITOR

A.C. Thompson is the speculative alter-ego of novelist Alexandra Christian. As A.C., Lexx brings us darker worlds full of shapeshifters, cyborgs and interplanetary adventures. She also enjoys bleeding her fellow writers with her Red Pen of Justice as an editor.

MAYA PREISLER (THEY/THEM) – MARKETING DIRECTOR

Maya Preisler has been creating art and writing stories since she could hold a pencil and scribble. She has a BFA in cross disciplinary studies from UNC Charlotte and has been working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator for over fifteen years. CRYSTAL SMALLING (SHE/HER) – ASSISTANT MARKETING DIRECTOR

Crystal likes creating content and other things that begin with the letter “C”, such as convention planning, cats, coffee, and crocheting. When she isn’t reading or binge-watching TV, she can often be found singing along with her current favorite playlists (usually consisting of filk, musicals, and 90s acoustic rock) while typing things on her laptop for a large company, or gaming. 

SUMIKO SAULSON (Zhe/Hir) – Proofreader

Sumiko Saulson is an award-winning author of Afrosurrealist and multicultural sci-fi and horror. Zhe is the editor of the anthologies and collections Black Magic Women, Scry of Lust, Black Celebration, and Wickedly Abled. Zhe is the winner of the 2016 StokerCon Scholarship from Hell, 2017 BCC Voice Reframing the Other contest, and 2018 Afrosurrealist Writer Award. She has an AA in English from Berkeley City College, and writes a column called Writing While Black for a national Black Newspaper, the San Francisco BayView.

wes smith (he/him) – Multipurpose human

Wes writes. Wes proofreads. Wes sells books. Wes picks things up and puts things down. Wes makes the website go. Wes does things we haven’t thought of yet. Do not taunt Happy Fun Wes, do not feed him after Midnight(unless he’s hungry, then feed the Wes). Wes is on Mastodon if you care to follow.
